It's not been that bad in my experience. It's all about having a good pitch. "Oh? You like tabletop RPGs? I'm going to run this game called X, it's *super freaking cool* and here's why!"

Or just be the forever GM and your group either deals with it or leaves, hahaha. But a good pitch is best!

Zero. Friends, including myself, desperately wanted to play. When the group was asked who would be the GM they all just kinda looked at me and assumed it would be me!

12 years later I'm GMing all kinds of games for all kinds of folks and still having a blast doing it.

Yeah, gotta say I agree with this. Been trying to say this all day but just hadn't found the words.

Horror, mostly. It's tagline is that it's a ghost story for ghosts. You start investigating and quickly learn that there are some truly evil and horrifying ghosts out there that are hunting other ghosts and working together to...?? And a large part of the game is investigating what they're doing.

Basically a World of Darkness campaign where the players are all playing as ghost hunters whose company has figured out how to teach people to project from their bodies and interact with the ghostly denizens of our world. It's called #Orpheus, though spoilers abound if you look it up!

Another tip. As long as there's at least a couple players and it isn't the climax of the game, then play anyway.

I find at least some players stop backing out last minute so much when they start missing stuff because they weren't there.

I'd agree with that. I have a rule for my table "If you rolled wrong, always reroll. If a die is cocked at all, always reroll it."

Simple, easy rules that have saved a shockingly depressing amount of pain at the table.

Make a monster that is like 12 AC + Doom. So when the god is weak it's fairly easy to hit. Then describe as it changes into something more fearsome as Doom goes up and potentially gets up to 22. Health can be 25 x Doom or whatever. Attack 1d12 + Doom. (or Doom-d12!) Things like that.

I like it, that's neat. I'd suggest anyone wanting to do something like that to take a look at the Doom system in Soulbound. Basically, depending on the action or inaction of the GM/players doom can go up or down. Some monsters get buffs at certain doom levels or have armor that is Base+Doom.
