It appears that the 430-440 MHz is only for a minor NB telemetry channel. The real traffic is at 37-42 GHz which I have no issue with.

My take is that the TNC connector fills a niche between the N, UHF, BNC, and SMA. The criteria include pwr level, freq, cable dia, cost, vibe, shock, weather, size, etc.
My recent choice of TNC was dictated by the cable being LMR240 (small cable dia), moderate power level, and rain.
