#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 10: Behind today’s door is the Razorbill, a black and white seabird. Like the Atlantic Puffin, it is an auk but, unlike the Puffin, it does not have a good PR department supporting it; Great Saltee Island, Co. Wexford, Ireland.
A Razorbill in its sits, facing left, on a rock encrusted on the left with yellow Xanthoria lichen and spattered with guano on the right. Another is in the background and out of focus. It has a black head and upper parts with white undersides. Its bill is laterally flattened (like an old-fashioned razor) with a vertical and a horizontal white stripe. Auks like the Razorbill and Puffin spend most of their lives at sea only coming to land for breeding, about 3 months a year.
