I decided to give students more agency & accountability for class participation grade by giving them a self evaluation form. They filed it out 3 times assessing their strengths and areas for improvements. At the end, they propose a grade.

Insightful for me, humbling & reflective for them.

Chapter 2 ("A Problem of Some Delicacy”) finished.

It has been intellectually challenging but satisfying to see how teaching human rights last spring paid off in rethinking the ways I could do better to center China's view of humanitarianism and how AND WHY it mattered in this story. Gratitude.

Newsflash: this trope in Chinese culture is nothing new. It was used in 1920s & 1930s to consider welcoming Jewish refugees from Europe w belief that they had connections with Jews who had financial & political control in the US.
