An important part of my work is to engage in dialogue with governments and parliaments of member states, and to assist them in addressing possible shortcomings in their laws and practices. I am writing to you in relation to the human rights situation of trans people, which was one of the topics of my recent visit to the United Kingdom (30 June to 4 July). During the visit, I also had an exchange with Lord Alton. In my end-of-visit statement of 8 July 2025, I expressed my concern about the current climate for trans people in the UK. I would like to provide you with some further observations, in view of your respective Committees’ interest in and engagement with this topic. These reflect similar observations shared with the Secretary of State for Education (Minister for Equalities), as well as the Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission. My observations relate to the need to respect the human rights of trans people, in line with the UK’s international human rights obligations, including as regards further steps following the Supreme Court’s judgment in For Women Scotland Ltd. v. The Scottish Ministers. This is particularly important as the Supreme Court did not engage with these human rights issues. I understand that an updated code of practice for services, public functions and associations has recently been submitted for consideration by the UK government, as the last step before the document becomes subject to Parliamentary approval. This does not in any way diminish their right to be treated with dignity, to be protected from discrimination, and to be able to participate in all areas of everyday life. As I note in my end-of-visit statement, I observe a tendency to see the human rights of different groups as a zero-sum game. This has contributed to narratives which build on prejudice against trans people and portray upholding their human rights as a de facto threat to the rights of others. Such a zero-sum approach risks certain inferences being drawn from the UK Supreme Court judgment that could lead to widespread exclusion of trans people from many public spaces. This, in turn, may severely infringe on their ability to participate fully and equally in society. This is particularly the case, as discussions about how access to services and facilities will have to be regulated following the judgment have tended towards the exclusion of trans people. It would therefore be crucial for all stakeholders to receive clear guidance on how inclusion of trans people can be achieved across all areas, and how exclusion can be minimised to situations in which this would be strictly necessary and proportionate, in line with well- established human rights principles. In reality, tensions between the human rights of different groups in this context are likely to be exceptional in nature, and resolvable through nuanced, reasonable and balanced accommodations. This would also be in line with the approaches taken by various bodies of the Council of Europe (such as the Committee on the Prevention of Torture (CPT) or the Group of Experts on Violence Against Women (GREVIO)), which recognise the particular vulnerability of trans people, and which begin from the position of their inclusion within spaces according to their gender identity – with exceptions made on a case-by-case basis as necessary. Before the Second World War, tuberculosis (TB) was widely feared. It had been one of the biggest killers in the 1800s. Once it was recognised that spittle contained the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, spitting in public was discouraged to prevent the spread of infection. Fortunately, drug therapy almost eradicated TB in wealthier countries in the decades after the Second World War. This sign was used on Great Southern & Western Railways in Ireland to prevent the spread of disease but also to discourage offending people. Spitting was once an acceptable habit but changing social manners, as well as its link with disease, led to it being frowned upon and viewed as offensive.

Anti fascist, not an organisation but an ethos that until recently it was weird to not be.

X post 13th September Metropolitan Police @metpoliceuk An update as of 16:50hrs. The turnout for the 'Unite the Kingdom' protest was too big to fit into Whitehall. Protesters left the route onto Victoria Embankment and sought to access Whitehall from multiple directions as shown on the map below. When officers moved in to stop them they faced unacceptable violence. They were assaulted with kicks and punches. Bottles, flares and other projectiles were thrown. Nine arrests have been made so far for various offences, but many more people have been identified as committing offences. We will find them and they will face police action, even if it is not possible to do so today. Officers are continuing to face aggression in multiple locations, in particular at the north of Whitehall as they work to create a safe exit route for those who have been taking part in the Stand Up To Racism protest. WASHINGTON — Charlie Kirk’s alleged assassin Tyler Robinson was living with a transgender partner who was in the process of transitioning from male to female, a law enforcement source confirmed to The Post Saturday. That individual, who has yet to be publicly identified by the authorities, is now fully cooperating with the FBI on its investigation into the fatal shooting of the conservative activist, the source added. The relationship was first reported by Fox News’ Brooke Singman. According to public records, Lance Twiggs, 22, resided at the same address where Robinson lived. I smiled, and said ‘Hi, can I help at all?’ The customer said ‘no thanks’ (or something to that effect, it was 4/5 months ago and I deal with a lot of customers) and left. I didn’t think anything of it and went to put the bras away. I am not a trained bra fitter, nor do I want to be. Therefore I am not allowed to give any advice or take a bra measurement. I had zero intention of doing anything of the sort, I did assume they were looking for a bra fit appointment so if they hadn’t left, I would have called up the trained bra fitter on shift and directed them to her. I said absolutely nothing that would show intent of me wanting to personally measure her teenage daughter’s chest. I also want to say that everyone who I work with knows I am transgender, because I do have a very deep voice and I am quite tall (5”11 not 6”2) and every single person in my store is supportive and accepting of who I am, including my boss, the other managers, and every colleague in every part of the store. At times my workplace is the only safe space in my life which is a bit sad. A couple weeks later, my boss calls me into her office and says she has received a complaint about this interaction. She had to make sure I did not give any bra fit advice which I did not (and the articles also say I did not too which is one of the only things that they got right). I got very upset because the customers complaint had systematically attacked every part of my being that I hate and cannot control, saying I had a ‘deep booming masculine voice’ and ‘extremely masculine facial features underneath my makeup’. My boss sent away the complaint saying I did nothing wrong and that she and the regional manager are on my side. End of story, I hoped. In between the time of the complaint and the first article being published I had gotten Facial Feminisation Surgery done, which again everyone was super supportive of (and everyone also loved the results and being part of the journey) They got me a box of chocolates and a card full of extremely thoughtful messages that I kept by my bedside in hospital. My Boss also got me a heart bracelet that I wear to work every day. It was my first day back from holiday when my boss called me into her office and told me about the article written in the papers. She got emotional on my behalf which really touched me, said another manager had ripped up and thrown out all the papers with this article in it in our store, and that the regional manager was on his way to personally talk to me regarding this. He also brought a message of support from HIS boss too, the Scotland stores director who has also personally gotten in touch with me. He clarified that the customer services department had issued an apology to the customer before they actually had the full story, and that the apology had been redacted once my boss and the regional manager set the record straight, saying any colleague can train to be a bra fitter and can work in any section of the store. However, the article writer did not say this, instead insinuating to everyone reading that M&S was not on my side when in fact the whole company is showing their absolute support to me. I’d like to point out that neither the lingerie department nor the walkway between lingerie and menswear where I asked the customer if she needed any help are ‘Women only’ places. I smiled, and said ‘Hi, can I help at all?’ The customer said ‘no thanks’ (or something to that effect, it was 4/5 months ago and I deal with a lot of customers) and left. I didn’t think anything of it and went to put the bras away. I am not a trained bra fitter, nor do I want to be. Therefore I am not allowed to give any advice or take a bra measurement. I had zero intention of doing anything of the sort, I did assume they were looking for a bra fit appointment so if they hadn’t left, I would have called up the trained bra fitter on shift and directed them to her. I said absolutely nothing that would show intent of me wanting to personally measure her teenage daughter’s chest. I also want to say that everyone who I work with knows I am transgender, because I do have a very deep voice and I am quite tall (5”11 not 6”2) and every single person in my store is supportive and accepting of who I am, including my boss, the other managers, and every colleague in every part of the store. Reform working on being the populist party. They are doing what Starmer did to get elected. Saying what they think people want to hear. In power they would remove human rights, & make sweeping changes to harm everyone. Their voting history gives clearer intentions.

Though the prisons expert also said that a blanket ban on trans women in female wards is wrong, and that each case should be judged on an individual basis. If that becomes the Reform line, it would put the party at odds with the Labour government which inherited and continued the policy of not placing any transgender women on female prison wings. Reform officials weren't saying if this is now party policy last night.
