Last week, Defra published new figures showing that UK farmers lost over £1bn in 2024 due to extreme weather conditions – with wheat production falling to its lowest level in four years. Exceptionally wet weather, poor planting conditions, and falling prices have left many arable farms struggling.

1. The one benefit of Brexit was a new farm subsidy system, that would pay for public goods such as ecological restoration. But now the government has frozen the new grants, while swiftly cutting off the old ones, leaving farmers high and dry. It's deeply unfair and highly destructive. 🧵

The Budget hits farmers too hard and tax avoiders too lightly. It needs to change.

So if you had started spending it on the NHS instead of farming at midnight on Sunday, it would have just run out.
