In complex life cycles, selection should act less efficiently in bottleneck stages. Plasmodium parasites go from a few cells at infection to 100s of millions in the blood. Selection strength varies accordingly. Brilliant work by @sarahperkins.bsky.social

Heterogeneous constraint and adaptation across the malaria parasite life cycle | Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
Evolutionary forces vary across genomes, creating disparities in how traits evolve. In organisms with complex life cycles, it is unclear how intrinsic differences among discrete life stages impact evolution. Here, we look for life history-driven patterns ...

This isn't even a slight exaggeration. He is actively working on destroying the US's entire vaccine infrastructure. The HepB vote will be tomorrow, where they will get rid of the birth dose and recommend it at 30 days, dooming a bunch of infants to chronic infection ft. cirrhosis, cancer, and death.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is expected to attend the funeral of a child who died a preventable death in a measles outbreak fueled by vaccine hesitancy.

The last time his beliefs fueled a measles outbreak, they ran out of infant-sized coffins in Samoa. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...
Decorated with butterflies, infant-sized coffins sent to measles-ravaged Samoa
Volunteers in the New Zealand city of Rotorua are preparing two dozen white-lined coffins to be transported to Samoa at the end of the week as the measles-ravaged Pacific island nation languishes under a growing death toll that has now hit 70.

“This is a wake-up call. People should be seeing this number and being very, very concerned, not just about butterflies, but about the state of insects in general”

1 in 5 butterflies in the U.S. have disappeared in the last 20 years
Researchers identified over 100 species that have dropped by more than 50 percent in the last two decades: "This is a wake-up call."

For those living outside of endemic regions, malaria as a real and present threat seems far fetched. The undiagnosed mystery illness in Panzi, DRC appears to be Malaria compounded by social determinants of health. An outbreak fueled by poverty and lack of HC access.

Congo's health ministry says unknown disease is severe malaria
Democratic Republic of Congo's health ministry said on Tuesday that a previously unidentified disease circulating in the country's Panzi health zone is a severe form of malaria.
