It's a useful reminder that sometimes tech can make a task more efficient for one side (applying for jobs), and more efficient for the other side (writing job adverts), and yet make the system as a whole completely inefficient.

That's a great way to describe it. You could have visited for a whole semester, and we would never have stopped conversing!

I have made clear this sends a terrible signal about what they consider the 'future of the UK research system' to be and I'd not attend such an event.

Expecting them to scramble for a token female speaker by the time of the event next week now that I've raised this with them

How aware is/are your MP(s) of what your local universities deliver beyond taught programmes? Little in political debate or media suggests that their understanding is high. Perhaps it's time to add tutorials with worked examples to the mix, before it's too late. ICSs offer easy starting points. 8/8

You need both. Decorations but no light = Don't knock/ring, but I've probably left out a bowl on the stoop. Light but no decorations = I'm home, but don't disturb. Light +Decorations = I welcome children!

PS "Money" does not necessarily mean direct payment to individuals. It means that if you are cold and hungry (literally when the building has no heat or you start skipping meals) you cannot afford to "take a turn" at hosting that mid-winter meeting. Think more broadly.

Overall, I am grateful to JMS for making this format and space available. I appreciate the authors for their service OF shining a light on this crisis, in writing. I remain frustrated that the discussion continues about everything else EXCEPT MONEY. [End]

Inability to volunteer does not cause "the very norms of rigour, mentorship, and community risk [to] unravel". Money does not undermine a spirit of service. (Hello, non-profit management professionals!) We need to learn to apply this knowledge to ourselves. (It's why I love Metascience!) [12/n]

Otherwise, there is nothing to fault among their suggestions. Unfortunately, all require MONEY. So we need to discuss from where this will come. The authors give token credit to the idea that publishers should share their wealth. JMS is a leader, providing honoraria for editorial work. [11/n]

They propose doctoral training involves socialization to service. Proper apprenticeship PGR instruction DOES include this, essentially job shadowing. Decline of this (due to faculty overwork & under-resource, as in the previous points) is the core problem -- not the lack of voluntary spirit. [10/n]
