It’s not necessarily letting people mistreat you. It’s offering more time for people to do the right thing. It’s not retaliating. It’s not using the full force of the law against them. It’s expecting nothing in return.

The king lets the slave go about his way, after he has begged for more time to pay his debt. And the king has pity on the slave and agrees. That’s the forgiveness Jesus wants.

That’s a fine explanation, but it’s not satisfying for me. Is forgiveness is something other than “not resisting an evil doer?” (Matt 5:39). Peter asks about forgiveness for wrong doing in Matt 18:21-22 and Jesus’ response is to tell a parable about a king who forgives a great

I’ve read explanations about how Roman soldiers might act and that’s what Jesus is addressing in the “turn the other cheek” pericope. He’s not talking about abuse, he’s talking about people taking advantage of us.

That whole turn the other cheek thing? That’s not “turn and walk away.” That’s “if somebody smacks you, let them smack you again.”
