In Sosúa, Herbert met Ruth Arnoldi, who was training to be a nurse at Sosúa Hospital. In 1947, they were the first couple to marry in Sosúa's newly built synagogue. The Kohns worked together at Sosúa Hospital and lived in a house close to the hospital in Batey.

At this time, he tried to bring his father Ludwig Kohn and stepmother Gertrud Kohn (nee Salzberger) to Sosúa, but unfortunately this failed due to a name mistake. His parents were deported to the Maly Trostinec death camp south of Minsk in May 1942 and murdered.

On December 7, 1940, Dr. Kohn arrived in the Dominican Republic as part of the “Swiss Group”. He initially worked on the Bombita farm, but then began practicing as a doctor at the Sosúa Hospital.

He studied medicine and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Graz, now the @medunigraz.at, in 1937. In August 1938, he emigrated to Switzerland, where he met a recruiter from the Joint who told him about a settlement project in Sosúa.

Last week I was in Graz for a teaching assignment. In the street where my accommodation was located, I noticed a memorial stone to a former Sosúa settler. Herbert Kohn was born in Graz in 1912 and lived with his family on the second floor of Strauchergasse 19 in the early 1930s.

As an editor to receive the galley for a 400-page anthology on December 24 is one thing, but then setting the deadline for resubmission on December 29 reflects the conditions of the current academic life very well…
