Long time no post, I have a few glaze projects spinning but here’s some winners from the last phase of testing for the blue/purple iridescent crystalline glazes. Pushing further into the purple range and even into some peachy pink/coppery tones

Finally working on a test tile mold for my casting slip. This will be the positive that the plaster is cast off of once bisque fired and soaped up with Murphy’s Oil Soap. Scraping firm leather hard clay into shape is so satisfying :)

The Fuji vases are so old I don’t have all the photos on my phone anymore, just some detail shots but you get the idea.

Thinking about weather, raw materials, geology, and the directionality of surfaces achieved through atmospheric firings. Lately I’m testing new slips under the neph sye “snow”

If I’m firing a kiln, I try to fit in as many tests as I can (without getting too sidetracked…) I’ve been wanting to revisit this surface treatment for some time now. Years ago I made these Mt. Fuji-inspired ikebana vases, but lately I’ve been thinking of this treatment for a new series of lamps.
A small, dome-shaped ceramic test tile coated in a black slip and over that, a glassy, reticulated textured surface somewhat similar to a crawl glaze. The technique utilizes poor particle packing to achieved the uneven, crawled texture. An old photo of a Fuji ikebana vase, containing wispy curly willow branches and a couple sprigs of fake cherry blossom branches.

Like most iridescent glazes in this family, it likes lots of indirect light to show off the ranges of purples, blues, and greens. Brown is the predominant base color.

Some in progress pics. All of the metal parts aside from the harp are patinated by myself to ensure both a consistent finish between parts, and a finish that best matches the glaze itself. I enjoy this intersection of the various skills I’ve picked up over the years working for a number of artists.
