I burn with shame when I confess I bought this last year.

Just finished a brilliant weekend of test pits in Hexham. So much enthusiasm from so many volunteers keen to learn about where they live. Huge thanks to the Hexham Local History Society for their sponsorship. #community #localhistory #archaeology

Warton Crag Fort. An elusive possible BA defensive something likely reused during the Iron Age & more than likely thereafter. But couldn’t see a thing anyway as the vegetation was so dense. And the crags look like ramparts so who knows. Nice view #HillfortsWednesday

Mind you, a loom weight or two always catch my eye.

Whinny Hill, Northumberland. A possible BA Four Poster almost totally buried in heather. Four stones present in total. Ranging poles mark purported ‘sockets’ of ‘missing’ stones, seems unlikely unless they were very recently removed. A site in much need of scheduling and care. #standingstoneSunday

The Three Kings Bronze Age Four Poster, Northumberland. Recently released from the Redesdale Forest dense tree cover that has surrounded in since the 1950s. #StandingStoneSunday

Loomweights? We’ve had a few, but then again … too many to mention. Or to bake.

A suddenly very wet and blowy visit to Goatstone EBA four poster in Northumberland. A return visit will be needed for the visibility images as there wasn’t any. #barkaeologist for scale #StandingStoneSunday

For those who also have a love of #archaeology site plans. Came across these on eBay. Hope Taylor’s plans of Ad Gefrin, I think from the original publication but showing no damage or sign of being cut from a book. Love them!

The Heel Stone, Stonehenge carries two benchmarks. Both to the lower right northeast face. The upper one references the old Liverpool datum. The lower one, mostly obscured by grass the Newlyn datum. #BenchmarkMonday

Looking from Chun Castle, West Penrith towards Chun Quoit. A breathtaking landscape and skyscape. (Probably qualifies for #TombTuesday and #HillfortsWednesday too …)
