When someone's bio reads "First Name Last Name has written for The New York Times, GQ, Rolling Stone, and The Washington Post," are those bylines? What are those called? I want to actually try to write and submit writing but am realizing how woefully behind I am on even basic terminology, and my confusion here is just one example of that.   Thank you for asking! You’re not alone in the confusion; “byline” can be a little opaque because it’s used differently in different contexts. I’ll get to that in a moment, but what I want to address first is that even industry professionals don’t know all the lingo, and especially not at first. As with a lot of industry-specific language—no matter the industry—a lot of these terms are just alienating synonyms for everyday words. (From my corporate days: a “deck” is a slideshow presentation, a “scrum” is a meeting, etc.)   When I’m invited as a guest speaker for classes—like for Chloe Caldwell’s yearlong nonfiction generator class—I like to bring with me a list of publishing industry terms that I figured out the hard way (as well as an overview of a book editor’s tasks and workflow). I do this because I want to de-mystify the, well, mystique around Publishing Terms, and because I had a mentor who let me feel very comfortable in regularly telling her “I don’t know what that means”

It's called "Holding Space (for your work)" and it works like this!

Pick one of the morning sessions weekly? Cool. Pick just the final half hour of both evening sessions? Also cool. Kiss of the Sun If, as they say, poetry is a sign of something among people, then let this be prearranged now, between us, while we are still peoples: that at the end of time, which is also the end of poetry (and wheat and evil and insects and love), when the entire human race gathers in the flesh, reconstituted down to the infant's tiniest fold and littlest nail, I will be standing at the edge of that fathomless crowd with an orange for you, reconstituted down to its innermost seed protected by white thread, in case you are thirsty, which does not at this time seem like such a wild guess, and though there will be no poetry between us then, at the end of time, the geese all gone with the seas, I hope you will take it, and remember on earth I did not know how to touch it it was all so raw, and if by chance there is no edge to the crowd or anything else so that I am of it, I will take the orange and toss it as high as I can.
