The EJI’s Community Remembrance Project is a profound act of reclaiming history. In gathering soil from lynching sites across the South, the memorial uses ground, to honor lives lost, confronting the nation’s legacy of racial terror. It also makes clear how groundless each of these fatal acts were.

Monuments shape narratives- and America's racial divide rests on myths they uphold. In 1916, Freeman Henry Morris Murray exposed this, challenging Confederate memorials. Today, groups like Monument Lab continue his work, revealing that more U.S. monuments honor mermaids than congresswomen.
