I was on San Jose Programming. They told us to create diverse panels... but didn't collect any demographics info on the possible panelists? I ended up asking my network who was interested, and who they recommended. The rest of Programming... well, you remember 😞

I like it because the moderator has a vision for their panel, which they can communicate to interested panelists and also "interview" panelists they don't know well to see if they're a good fit.

The moderator can submit a panel with or without all panelists pre-selected, and Program will help them find panelists if the panel is accepted and the moderator wants help.

So there is a FB group for folks who are looking for panelists/interested in paneling, and the Program staff know quite a few people as well. So the moderator of the panel has resources beyond their own network to find qualified panelists.

Which one would you recommend I read first?

GeekGirlCon runs on a bottom-up model and it's one of my favorites! I have several friends who I met when a mutual friend put us on a panel together, or when Programming suggested them to me for my own panels.

I highly recommend Elizabeth Hand's sequel! It was authorized by the estate.

One of my all-time faves! Btw the scene where she falls on her ass HARD on the bleachers was an actual clumsy moment but she told them to keep going 🤣
