Excited to share a piece I wrote on the effects of China’s germanium and gallium export restrictions!

Chinese trade data shows no gallium or germanium going to the United States in 2024, so why does US trade data show material coming in from China? The answer could be reexport. Give it a read! 👇

Closing the de minimis loophole will be another challenge for Chinese exporters; many have been exploiting the loophole when they ship goods to the United States through Mexico.
President Donald Trump’s new trade levies against China, Canada and Mexico include a broadside against e-commerce, with apparent plans to extinguish a long-held tariff exemption for packages worth less than $800.

A signal that China doesn’t think the Taliban is doing enough to keep its citizens safe. It will be interesting to see how this changes the patterns of China’s already cautious investment in Afghanistan this year
China said Thursday it had lodged “solemn representations” with Afghanistan’s Taliban government over the killing of a Chinese mine worker in an attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

A Chinese citizen is reported to have been killed in Takhar. Unfortunate timing; China and Afghanistan just celebrated the 70th anniversary of relations Monday after the anniversary went unmarked last year.

Not surprising, but would be a big change at a time when trade relations are already expected to be more fraught under Trump. The increasing push for tougher rules on China on trade in Congress demonstrates one motivation for the targeting of down-ballot races. www.reuters.com/world/us/chi...

This is interesting - it helps partially explain China’s strong support for Palestine over Israel. While China now has better bonds with Arab and Global South countries and made the US look bad, it could also have cost China the chance to serve as the reliable mediator of choice in the conflict.

Interesting to see a dual narrative coming out of Xiangshan Forum: strong rhetoric on Taiwan while also emphasizing opportunities for more contact between 🇺🇸&🇨🇳 militaries. Not knowing what the 2024 U.S. election holds, it feels like a balance between two possible futures.
