Leaving Derry/Londonderry after three incredible days at the #PeatConf25 felt quite sad this morning. Thanks to @iucn-uk-peat.bsky.social for another outstanding event helping the peatland restoration sector move onward and upward.

Can't wait to soak in all the inspiration contained in my new library addition. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to spend the day with the amazing authors and all the enthusiastic, creative people who joined the session yesterday.

Dr Anna Chilves and Clare Shaw then taught us about the power of creative expression. Equipped with tools and understanding of good story telling, we left the session prepared to tell our own story of peatland restoration in a new, creative and engaging way. Truly a transformative experience!

Braving the wet weather, we set off on an adventure to explore the fascinating world of mosses, liverworts, lichens, mushrooms and all the inconspicuous but ever present forms of life in urban spaces. Guided by Johny Turner, we learned to notice and appreciate the smallest plants out there.

The best bit? I finally got to see a digger in action! The final puzzle piece in my peatland restoration learning journey. It was impressive - the whole dam was created with 5 minutes! I could stand there and watch the skilled contractor all day!

Peatlands without borders offered really interesting international perspectives.
Marko Kohv spoke about "shaky common ground" as definitions of peatlands (or restoration) vary across different countries, just like views on how we use peatlands.

What can conventional farmers learn from organic? Shifting focus from short-term planning and operation to long-term vision for the farm.

Terminology can be your worst enemy. All advisors I spoke to don't use the word "mitigation" when talking to farmers. They adivse on adaptation measures only, because those offer tangible benefits and co-benefits to farmers while often reducing emissions.
