Both the current and the previous Uni of Melbourne Chancellors, Jane Hansen and Allan Myers, were appointed after making $40m and $10m donations.😶

The Feds' much-touted governance council had better get the big stick out of the cupboard. @nteuvictoria.bsky.social

Ken McAlpine is called for evidence now. He provides a clarification to one aspect of his evidence that he described as "too Jane Austen" in that it was not a truth universally acknowledged, rather a truth that is well understood and accepted.

Justice Snaden asks whether he ever does any marking during tutorials? Ciaravolo says yes, sometimes the students do an exercise that is naked in the class. The judge asks for what sort of incidental administration he does as part of his teaching. Very little springs to mind.

Siobhan Kelly takes Ciaravolo through his teaching preparation. When you get a tutorial plan, what does that consist of? Not a specific plan, he replies, more just some general notes about materials to teach. Tutors then have to turn these notes into an actual tutorial plan

In session in the Federal Court for Monash Uni’s wage theft case. I’ll be live posting from this hearing today. The NTEU alleges Australia’s largest university has not lawfully paid hundreds, perhaps thousands, of its casual teachers going back to 2016. Justice Snaden is the judge.

"The idea we should be regarded as public servants in some sense is kind of crazy," - no it isn't.

Duncan Maskell rejects criticism of million-dollar pay packets for vice chancellors, hits back at claims there are too many overseas students, and insists a university education should be free.
