A few years ago, when I was in my 1940s RKO phase, I read Val Lewton’s novel No Bed Of Her Own, and I wish I hadn’t because it tends to resurface in my brain at times like this.

A woman at the coffee shop today said she loved my dungarees. She said she didn’t have the courage to wear patterns or bright colours - but she wished she did.
What should I have said? I was just like, oh, it’s not really a big deal, you just wear what you like and have… fun??
