BiodiversityLoss
@sarahclayton7777.bsky.social
The earth is now experiencing the 6th major mass extinction of species. This time caused by us - humanity. Due to our immense numbers, and vast consumption of energy and resources. Maybe, just maybe, we can reduce the damage.
Decline in wild bees, including bumble bees; in butterflies; in hoverflies, across Europe and the UK.
Largely caused by habitat loss and what we have done for agriculture, producing crops and rearing animals.
What can be done, quickly, to reverse this? www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The 7th edition of the European Environment Agency report, published every 5 years since 1995, found:
More than 80% of protected habitats are in a poor or bad state, with “unsustainable” consumption and production patterns driving loss of wildlife. etc etc

Interesting. There is more CO2 in deep ocean waters, than in shallow ocean-climate.org/en/awareness... This explains the reasons, by the physical carbon pump (currents, sinking water in high latitudes) and the biological carbon pump (organisms dying & sinking).
Now there is more CO2 in surface too

Should we despair of social media, and the subjects most users want to see more on?

This is the list, given by Bluesky, of Recommended "things we think you might like".

So this is what much of the traffic on Bluesky is about??

How many birds survive the cold:
Warm arterial blood headed toward the feet from the body runs next to veins of cooled blood returning from the feet to the body. Heat is transferred between the outgoing and incoming veins; blood returning into the body recovers much of the heat, so it is not lost

California fires.
Lots in this article, about the ways in which wild animals are being killed by the fires, and the problems they may face, if they are able to move into another area. For many that is really hard and really dangerous.

North Atlantic Right Whales: their median lifespan is 22 years; only 10% of them are likely to live past age 47. These grim statistics reflect the heavy mortality the animals suffer because they are regularly hit by ships & get tangled in fishing gear.

Beyond sad. www.science.org/content/arti...

Whale & Dolphin Conservation has been campaigning for years to ban the practice of keeping whales and dolphins captive in tanks, for human entertainment.
It's terribly cruel.
And entirely unnecessary.
Some airlines and travel companies have stopped promoting it.
People should avoid these shows

Wildlife Aid (Surrey) say this poor pigeon came off worse after a sparrow hawk attack. With the back of the bird's head completely scalped, our vets would certainly have had a tough job to repair it. Sadly, the bird was only brought in 3 days later, making the damage it had suffered, irreversible

Wildlife Aid (Leatherhead, Surrey) say vehicle collisions make up 9% of their annual patient intake and ranks in the top 5 reasons for admission. We know many collisions are unavoidable, but slowing down, especially at night, you could dramatically decrease the likelihood of a fatal collision.

The same for our rescue dwarf Nederlands house rabbit, who is now getting older - and terrible for carpets. But he has as much right to life as anyone, and it is our duty to make his days as happy and stress-free as possible.

Meltwater from Greenland and the Arctic is probably starting to weaken ocean circulation to speed up warming down south, model suggests phys.org/news/2024-11... A vast network of ocean currents nicknamed the "great global ocean conveyor belt" may be slowing down, and will cause rainfall etc changes
