Yara groans, but keeps hold of the oh shit bar above her window and doesn't complain as Jo bumps over the potholes in the drive and circles to the back parking lot where—yes! A car is still in the lot and light is spilling through the double-doors beside the gym. Jo rolls up as close to the brick as she can get, then reverses until she near hits the dumpster behind her. "Everyone inside." She locks her car so the lights go out, then follows the others into the school. "Hello?" she shouts. "Hello?" A head pops out of the locker room. Then, a—thankfully fully-clothed—Patty Raid steps into the hall. "What's all this?" Jo swallows her pride. "I need a huge favor. It's sort of a long story, but we're— Jesus. We've got some cops looking for us and— Would you mind parking your car beside mine to block it so they don't see it and find out where I live?" "What?" Yara steps forward "One of those cops is her piece of shit father who I just pepper sprayed and he's looking for ways to extort decades old life insurance money out of her and her brother." She looks at Jo. "It's really not that long a story." "Feels long in my head."

Theodore Spinoza was crying the first time Nash ever saw him. With the principal's hand on his shoulder, she explained that Teddy was new to the school, new to the community, and needed their help to adjust. Everybody knew that only meant to not tease him about his red face and the streaks of snot on his sleeves. At that moment, looking at Teddy all sad and soppy with his sharp chin tipped up anyway, Nash made a decision. With all his six years of worldliness and wisdom, Nash decided no way did he want anything to do with that snot-faced kid. Not when he was already in charge of keeping his snot-faced sister right and happy, and not with Daddy's fits of violence already taking up more than their fair share of his concern. Theodore Spinoza was on his own. It's funny how life can take a decision like that and twist it into something precious and unexpected. Theodore Spinoza is angry twenty years after Nash thought he saw him for the last time. Considering the funeral and the broken promises looming between them—rot-riddled and long past fixing—the animosity isn't surprising, but it seems nobody clued Teddy in on the ruined state of things. Or maybe they did and he blew past the warning signs same as when they were kids, all stupid determination and unbridled confidence. Nash should know better than to get caught up in him again after how things ended, but Teddy's storm winds stir fresh vitality into his stagnant life and the tempest tastes like a second shot at something special.

Without preamble, Yara yanks her purse up from the floor and upends it on the table. Out spills an assortment of items. Among them: a denim wallet with a gold zipper, a couple of tampons, a small box of condoms, an aerosol fragrance stamped with a jar of honey, and several gel pens. "These are what you should be focused on." Yara flicks forward a pink can of pepper spray and a pair of brass knuckles—iridescent and shaped like a cat's head. "I live alone, I travel alone, I eat out alone, I hook up with strangers, and I ride the bus. I know how to take a man to the ground and make a quick getaway. I've done it before." She smiles, sharp and unamused. "Am I qualified to chaperone your adult sister to her sports practice?" To his credit, Nash looks chagrined. "I— Look, I'm sorry. I'm just keyed up about all of this. Thank you for coming all this way for Jo and offering to look out for her. It means a lot." Jo leans towards Yara and mutters loud enough for everyone, even Luke scrubbing dishes at the sink, to hear, "Funny how you got an apology and I didn't." "Christ alive, Jo!" Nash exclaims, well and truly done with her pestering. "I'm sorry to you too, okay?"

It's telling that neither he nor Teddy try to talk her out of coming home in the middle of a job. She resolves herself to a long sleepless night. "Do you want me to stay on the phone until I get to the airport? I'll put the camera on." There's silence for a beat and then Nash says, "No, I think I'm okay. You'll be here at nine?" "Yes. Nine 'o' clock this morning." She'll show up to the airport and beg a ticket off someone if she has to. "Can I talk to Teddy for a second?" There's a shuffle and then the sound quality changes before Teddy says in her ear, "I won't actually kill him." "You won't do fucking anything, Spinoza. You won't go looking for him. You won't search up his address or his phone number. You're going to stay in that house and you're going to keep my brother calm and cared for or, so help me God, I'll make your insides your outsides."

made her granddaughter a new quilt every five years for Christmas, and she'd been hoping to get one more out. Had the pattern put together and everything, just couldn't get her hands to do the work." Teddy slowly sits back and takes in the unfinished project with a familiar gleam. "This is it? Her last quilt? And you're trying to finish it before Christmas?" "Trying," Nash says. "Put it off too long, I think. You wouldn't believe how much ironing there is." Teddy grins. "Well, I've spent my entire adult life avoiding ironing, but I'm game to see how far we can get tonight if you are." "It's tedious," Nash warns. "It's a puzzle." With careful fingers, he slips the worn sheet of graph paper Maureen sketched her vision onto from under a heap of scraps and loose thread. He holds up a sewn panel beside it to see where it fits in the whole. "I like puzzles." "It's not half as exciting as hockey, so I get it if it's not up your alley." Teddy lowers the paper and looks at him. "You keep forgetting I'm an accountant. Tedious puzzles are my alley. It's even got math." He flicks at the measurements carefully inked along the edge in shaky script. And then he looks at Nash like he sees straight through his "cagey" demeanor and "stony" disposition and says, "You don't need to worry about entertaining me. I promise I'm just as lame as you remember." And maybe that's the problem, because he doesn't remember Teddy as the nerdy loser the both of 'em were. He remembers a storm wind—wild and tempestuous—sweeping out the bad, imbuing life in dry, cracked earth, and then blowing out the same way he came in. All at once.

Jo's phone pings for the fourth time in as many minutes, but she still refuses to leave the bath to pick it up. It's late and she's been listless since they wrapped up the call with Zook and everyone except her split off with something to do. She hates feeling like an interloper—a third wheel. Surely, that's not an ugly leftover from her childhood years spent chasing Nash's heels only to get ditched by him and Teddy more often than included. She pries at that feeling, hoping to unlock something, but her memories of the days before Daddy left stay obscured by time and trauma. She gets pops and impressions. The smell of old straw and soft light playing through dust motes. Light feet hurrying up a creaky staircase. Nash—smiles that never reached his eyes, quiet words spoken while half-turned as though expecting someone else to enter the room, his body heat on one side of her and the cool wall on the other. Shield. Protector. Brother. And of course that bone deep, sickly stomach feeling that everything she does is wrong. That the best thing she can do is stay still and silent and not cause anyone extra grief. She still feels that. Sometimes she forgets it's there, driving her. Pushing her back toward the quiet box that she hates, that she fights against by going louder, kinder. Obstinately joyful until she forgets that it's an act of rebellion against the shadows that lurk in corners of things.

"Have him put together a playlist or something." "We have a DJ." "So? Don't you want to make sure they play stuff you both like? What if it's all hetero Christian bullshit for four hours?" [Jo] curls onto her side and croons in Teddy's ear, "God gave me you for the ups and doooowns." "Oh no." "God gave me you for the days of doouubt." Teddy rolls to his knees and staggers upright. "Hurry up and shower. I need my laptop." She sits up as he jogs for the men's locker room. "Let Nash do it!" He ignores her and exits the gym. She scoffs, "Control freak," and lays back down. She'll take her time getting to the showers, thank you very not. He can wait. It's what he gets for talking to her about his stupid wedding nonstop for months on end. Two more months. Two more months and… Ugh. Two more months and they'll be in their honeymoon phase. And then they're going to adopt a little girl and—aw geez. They're going to be unbearable as parents. If Jo was smart she'd bail now, before it gets worse, but that little girl's gonna need her more than anybody.

Good morning! I started The Country Under Heaven which is wild west meets lovecraftian horror. I'm only one chapter in and we've already done mob justice murder based on the testimony of a dead girl. I'm really enjoying it!

She stuffs her hands in her windbreaker and eyes Jo. "Did I by chance overhear you just now laying the ole Southern thanks for the concern but fuck off on poor Henric?" Jo rolls her eyes. "I know he means well but I've never had the patience for chivalry." Yara's gaze slips past Jo. "I could have patience for chivalry." She sucks her bottom lip, then releases it—plump and wet. "Chivalry is all yours," Jo says dryly, "but let me know in advance if chivalry is going to get in the way of our date tonight." Yara rolls her eyes and turns away from her ogling to face Jo fully. "Jowens, I wouldn't miss a date with you for the world. I mean that." Yara flutters her fingers at her. "Absorb that. Internalize it. Don't make me repeat myself. I love you, you dope. Your company is valuable and meaningful to me and I am not going to sully it by ditching you for sex. Capisce?"

"Nash, wait!" He stops and when he turns, Teddy is right there, handkerchief down around his neck, and looking up at him with an unreadable expression. "Put that back on, would you? If you have an attack, you won't be allowed out tomorrow." Teddy tugs at the handkerchief but doesn't lift it back over his nose. "You want to do this again tomorrow?" "'Course." He pauses and considers Teddy's anxious stance for the first time. "Don't you?" "Yeah. Yeah, I just... So what Jo said didn't bother you?" Nash blinks at him. "Did Jo say something?" His sister says a lot of things, most of which he filters out until she says something that actually matters. Weeks can pass that way. "She— On the bus? About— About us?" His cheeks flare red, but he screws up his mouth and holds Nash's stare like he dared himself not to look away. "About us kissing and stuff." "Oh." Nash recalls her going on about that, but he hadn't taken her seriously. Looking at Teddy now, he wonders if he should have. Or if, at the very least, he should have checked with Teddy sooner to make sure he wasn't. "She was just messing around." "Yeah, I know, but did her saying it bother you?" "Why would it?" Teddy's embarrassment burns away to a familiar irritation. "I don't know, maybe because lots of people get all weird about guys kissing, and I didn't know if you were one of them." "Oh. Well, I guess I'm not. Are you?" "Am I what?" "Weirded out by guys kissing?" Teddy clams up, searching Nash's eyes through clear lenses. He takes a breath and pushes it out. Steps back. "No. See you tomorrow." Nash watches him spin on his heel and strike off down the road with a peculiar twist in his belly. Like Teddy was tryin' to tell him something important, and he just wasn't quick enough to pick it up.

So it's while he's beating a tambourine on his hip, stomping 'round with Loretta on his arm, and hollerin' about that old Joe Clark that he feels someone arrive at his side. He turns to greet them, expecting one of the ambulatory residents to have sought him out with a request. Nash nearly drops Darla's tambourine when he finds Teddy instead. His nose is pink with cold, rain drops sparkle in his hair, and he's got a visitor's sticker stuck to his jacket identifying him as Theo. Shocked stupid, Nash goes statue-still and heat flushes up his neck and well into his cheeks. He knows it's a magnificent blush when Loretta takes one look at him and bursts into a witch cackle of a laugh. "Happy Valentine's!" she crows, then plants a wiry kiss smack on his cheek before he can react and bustles off, smacking her lips in time with the rattle of her maraca. Teddy is smiling—easy and full—the kind that makes his nose wrinkle and sets the lack of a gap between his front teeth at center stage. And Nash realizes it's the first time he's seen him smile in twenty years. The simple curl of his lips sets him ablaze like a sunlit cloud. Teddy moves in close and pitches his voice over the commotion. "Real tough job you've got here!" He glances down. "Where's your cane?"

Thanks John! I debuted with Red but I cant talk about Red without also talking about Blue, which I published shortly after. Red is a prequel novella that follows Nash and Teddy as kids, and Blue is a 2nd chance romance where they meet again 20 years later at a funeral.
