I remember the world before the web. I've hiked dark canyons, photographed wild places, studied Geography, stayed married until cancer took my spouse, adopted kids, had a career in law enforcement & write stuff. I'm transgender.
Romance felt like it held second place to the academic issues addressed in the story. All the characters and locations were well designed and real. A little romantic subtext and a little less science in their conversations might place romance on equal footing with climate science in a romance story.

By the time LGBTQIA people come out to the world, they have mostly purged hypocrisy, lies and shame, those tools used by conservatives. It's hard to learn until one abandons filters that no longer defines rather than includes the other.

I'm losing my hearing and sometimes "Sarah" sounds like "Sir" and it unbalances me for a moment.
