We, the authors of the nine picture books named in Mahmoud v Taylor, collectively issued this statement in response to today’s SCOTUS decision.

ALL children deserve to see themselves reflected in books.

A reader reached out to us about a signed copy of Jacob’s New Dress, which we were delighted to have the chance to hand-deliver in London! Right in front of Sherlock Holmes. @angelsk.bsky.social

We don’t go into this fight alone.

We stand with our fellow authors and illustrators whose books show empathy, representation, and inclusion.

These books help kids who are different be seen, and all kids to learn to be kind. #inclusiveeducation @penamerica.bsky.social @glaad.bsky.social

We had a fantastic time presenting yesterday for our beloved publisher, Magination Press, at the American Psychological Association offices. We talked about how our books came to be, being banned authors, and the Supreme Court case that involves our book Jacob’s Room to Choose.

The Supreme Court will rule on whether parents can opt their children out of seeing LGBTQ+ books. Along with the other authors of the books in this case, we have been wondering if any of the justices will actually read the books. Author Sarah Brannen’s fabulous political cartoon marks the moment.

Republicans are now reinventing the definition of indoctrination. They are attempting to shove queer kids and families back into the closet with claims of emotional trauma to children for simply seeing that diversity exists in society.

We believe that everyone should be able to use the bathroom safely & all children should be able to see themselves represented in picture books.

How will it turn out for Mahmoud v. Taylor headed to the Supreme Court on April 22nd?

We got to talk to first graders today at Katherine Delmar Burke School, one of our favorite places to visit! We read Jacob’s Missing Book to kids for the very first time, and Ian had the unexpected opportunity to read to one student individually after—she chose Julian at the Wedding by Jessica Love.

All children need to be able to use the bathroom safely. That’s why we wrote Jacob’s Room to Choose.

There are all sorts of ways to be in the world.

Not all parents agree, and our book is headed for the Supreme Court, with 8 other picture books with LGBTQ+ characters. #kidlit #ReadFreely
