I am unhappy with the Minister's threats to eliminate trustees who provide parents and caregivers with a voice in education. I'm asking the minister to commit to funding for our public schools that keeps pace with inflation, and the costs of providing the excellent public education all children in this province deserve. I'm calling to voice my opposition to Bill 33 because it weakens our school boards and mandates policing in schools. We do not need policing in schools; we need funding for more supports and smaller class sizes. Data from across North America shows that students with disabilities have significant negative impacts from school officer programs, and the 'safety' supports that are needed are social workers, child & youth workers, education support workers, and other professionals. HOW TO: BRING A MOTION DEMANDING PROPER EDUCATION FUNDING AND OPPOSING SUPERVISION School Advisory Councils Every school has a School Advisory Council (SAC) or parent council. They are a great way to connect with other parents and to have strong parent voices in the school system advocating for the proper funding of our schools. School Councils have an official role in the provincial school system, it is powerful to use this role to hold the Provincial Government to account. Step 1 Toronto Education Advocacy Network (TEAN) has prepared a sample motion directing your school council to write a letter to the provincial government. Revise the template motion to reflect any specific issues that may be particularly relevant to the parent & caregiver community at your school. You probably know some of these. Speaking to council members and other parents/caregivers will help you identify more. Include these in your WHEREAS clauses in the motion. Step 2 Any parent/caregiver is welcome to attend SAC meetings and can raise an issue or motion to discuss and vote on at SAC meetings. Depending on the council by-laws at your school there may be different processes around raising and voting on issues. (see also: TEAN's Speaking About Education Advocacy on School Council Toolkit) Step 3 Connect with your SAC co-chair or a member of the executive to put this motion on the agenda of your next council meeting. step 4 Bring information and flyers about Step education cuts along with the motion to your SAC meeting. Step 5 When passed, the school council chair/co-chairs can use the template letter as a starting point for their letter, so they don't have to write it from scratch. Please revise the letter and make it your school's own! SEND via email to the Minister of Education and CC list, the motion and letter, on SAC motion template.

WHAT IS REORGANIZATION AND WHY IS IT SO DISRUPTIVE THIS YEAR? The reorganization process happens every year in September to balance the actual enrollment numbers against the projected numbers from the spring. This year seems to be particularly disruptive as it appears the needs of individual schools and students have not been taken into account in the process and the board has been forcing schools to make changes based purely on numbers rather than the unique circumstances of each school. In a typical year, trustees meet with superintendents and school representatives and advocate for the schools' needs on an individual basis. It is within the power of the board to maintain staff to reduce disruption. Trustees also communicate changes and decision making processes to schools, school councils, parents and caregivers.
