I hope this photo makes you pause today. I know I am. Consider what you think of people who might be considered “on the other side” from yourself. And let’s build start building bridges. (7/7)

This is why I post so much & am active in causes I believe in. Because the lives that have been cut short - on 9/11, by school shootings and gun violence, by political violence, by authoritarianism, by discrimination and hate - deserve to be honored by the actions of those of us still here. (6/7)

I hope - against all hope, it feels like - we can get back to a society that truly cares for each other in small, everyday ways in addition to big, societal ways. To provide resilience and healing to us all. (5/7)

Hearts have become hardened to the circumstances of others. I know I have felt this too. But I try to give grace to others, build bridges where I can and stand up for what is right, in the names of all those taken from us that day and since. (4/7)

That shield seems to be breaking down in ways I never would have imagined it could. No one walks in another’s shoes anymore. Discrimination is practiced outwardly & is applauded. Hypocrisy is rampant & coming from so many more directions. We saw this yesterday in reactions to 2 shootings. (3/7)

On September 12, we all pulled together, cared for each other, gave grace to each other. Petty differences were put aside for the greater good and in an acknowledgement that the fabric of a society is only as strong as the fibers that bind us. Our resilience became a shield for all. (2/7)

#NeverForget If this is the first time you are seeing the photo, my husband took it from our bedroom window in Brooklyn. The enormity of what was happening wasn’t yet apparent, so he snapped it and then went to work. On the subway that ran directly under the towers.

Got into some good trouble yesterday to mark 5 years since John Lewis’s death. Honored to carry the photo of Luis Fernandez, a father of 2 from Ecuador and a beloved waiter at a popular Manhattan diner, picked up by ICE at his immigration hearing. His GoFundMe -> comments if you want to help.

When democracy is under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back! When immigrants are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back! When due process is under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!

Spent the weekend in VA’s Natural Bridge State Park, it was gorgeous and historic. Families and retirees were hiking, lots of folks with dogs like us, along with plenty of locals starting their mornings. I kept thinking of how our parks’ cleanliness and safety are about to suffer. Such a shame.

Glad to hear this, especially after reading the op-ed by a former Winter Park, FL teacher now living in Ukraine. He’s still trying to teach history to us in the US. I hope it works.

A challenge to White friends & family: intentionally celebrate Black History Month as a form of resistance against the blatant racism we have seen from the Trump administration. Our Black friends & family are tired of trying to educate White people about American History. Join me. Onward together.
