What I love about old tools is that the very act of using them restores them. The gentle abrasion of wood combined with being wiped down and oiled slowly breaks down rust and grime over time and allows dried out materials and finishes to reabsorb oil. The result is a beautiful almost plum color.

That kanji, also read as Ebisu (戎), refers to a country hick or remote barbarian. At one point it was a derogatory way to refer to the Ainu people, to give an impression of the weight of it. And gao is the onomatopoeia for a roaring beast or monster. So smiling hill/Ebisu hill/roaring savages hill.

There's several layers at play, which might be hard to see from these pictures. On the base glove there's a strap extending from the fingertips which the plates are permanently riveted to. Then the plates are tied to loops on the glove to keep them held tight to the hand.

This morning it was nearly black with grime, chipped to fuck, nearly a quarter of the veneer peeling up. One of the other volunteers wanted to learn my sorcery, so I guided them through the investigation, cleaning, and veneer re-glue. Tomorrow will be the refinish ✌️

I love getting pushed to make my own tools at the repair shop. This table needed to be strip sanded and refinished, but sanders can't do moldings very well. I carved a bit of scrap with matching convex and concave faces to use as a sanding block, preserving the crisp lines of the table edge.

I'm at the point where Hyakkimaru is still blind and has prosthetic hands but can now hear and feel touch and seeing him excitedly rub his forehead against everything to identify it is so captivating.
