Here's a set of Irish warrior themed pictures I drew as a gift for @nicnak044.bsky.social and @foxjump.bsky.social back in 2018! Featuring their sonas as a Gallowglass, a Kern and a Fianna respectively #furry #anthro
Nicnak's lynx sona Nicole dressed as a Gallowglass to reflect her Irish heritage. The Gallowglass (from Irish: gallóglaigh meaning "foreign warriors") were a class of elite mercenary warriors who were principally members of the Norse-Gaelic clans of Ireland and Scotland between the mid 13th century and late 16th century. The gallowglasses were attractive as heavily armoured, trained infantry to be relied upon as a strong defence for holding a position, unlike most Irish foot soldiers, who were less well armoured than the typical Irish noble who fought as cavalry. Nicnak's coyote sona Sahara dressed as a Kern, A kern was a Gaelic warrior, specifically a light infantryman, in Ireland in the Middle Ages. Foxjump's cross fox fursona Dashwood dressed as a Fianna. Fianna were small warrior-hunter bands in Gaelic Ireland during the Iron Age and early Middle Ages. A fian was made up of freeborn young men and women, often from the Gaelic nobility of Ireland, "who had left fosterage but had not yet inherited the property needed to settle down as full landowning members of the túath". For most of the year they lived in the wild, hunting, cattle raiding other Irish clans, training, and fighting as mercenaries. Scholars believe the fian was a rite of passage into manhood, and have linked fianna with similar young warrior bands in other early European cultures.
