I would say midwest emo is emo infused with more indie rock sensibilities, a little less screaming and more twinkly guitars—it’s hard to pin down exactly where on the emo spectrum it starts and stops but I think of bands like American Football, Tigers Jaw, Algernon Caldwallader & Modern Baseball.
