I’m really interested how this plays out. If it does, publicly. He could be a hero or simply get swallowed up by the propaganda machine. At this point, what does he have to lose? He could bring light to this effort by NYT and be revered or just slink back into the darkness. That’s my take anyway.

I don’t know if we really know the whole story. I’m not sure your criticism is unfounded. Michael Gold and/or the senior editors have been sane washing. If MG steps up and tells of a greater effort to hide the truth then perhaps he deserves more credit. Hard to tell at this point.
