Add to all this "gaze talk" the intentional "not looking" of denial: "[S]he did not see the gray ball because she never looked. But that was the terrible part, the effort it took not to look" (109). Oh, wait! The optimal gaze is not a gaze at all; it's LOOKING, which is something entirely different.

How much minding is good enough? Maybe it always depends on WHO is doing the minding? 👀 The personality shapes the quality of the gaze. To adapt Morrison herself, maybe "the gaze is never any better than the gazer."
