There is one thing I noticed: a lot of the things cited as reasons for putting preteens in a separate building--strict curricular requirements for 9-12, interscholastic athletics, prom queen elections--have their own inherent issues which eighteen-year-olds are not immune to.

Thank you! This was a very interesting read. It seems like the authors of this article think the problem is the proposed reforms of the middle school movement were often only implemented superficially. Which aspects do you think were bad ideas from the get-go?

Is there any place I can read more about the "middle school movement"? I hadn't really been aware that there was such a thing until you mentioned it and I'm intrigued.
