Australian writer Elisa Cristallo paints a vision of a futuristic Australia in crisis, mobilising some of the most forceful issues of the 21st century (climate crisis, class struggle and inequality, the weaponsiation of religious narrative). The novel's multiple perspectives allow for the emergence of a holistic picture of the novel's world. Despite the brevity of some of the novel's sections, Cristallo movingly constructs characters that feel entirely relatable and unrelatable at the same time; the empathy with which some of the characters interact intersecting with the incomprehensibility of their struggles. Through the craftful manipulation of plot and character dynamics, the novel breaks out of the bleak image it paints and showcases how our most common denominator can't be reduced to just being human but needs to be articulated as something more powerful: our ability to come together and collectively become protagonists in the story of our human future.
