Here, we discover that the selective degradation of scnRNAs corresponding to non-TE sequences requires the Paramecium nuclear protein Gtsf1, which we show interacts with the scnRNA binding protein Ptiwi09. (5/8)

produces scnRNAs from both TE and non-TE sequences. Then, the subset of scnRNAs that correspond to TEs is selected and triggers the physical removal of TEs from the genome, a definitive form of TE silencing. (4/8)
