...capturing the most recent developments in the field since the publication of the 1st edition by Bob Franklin and @seldridge.com seven years earlier. We hope the companion will serve students, scholars, and practitioners of digital journalism for many years to come.

Wrapping up this comprehensive edited volume, Marcel Broersma and @seldridge.com engage with the two sides of an ongoing debate – whether to center news or users when trying to situate journalism in a digital information ecology.

Finally, digital journalism studies requires novel methodological approaches; here the authors highlight tools for tracing the development of journalisms, experimental research, computational methods, ethnography, arts-based methods, and challenges in researching digital audiences.

In a fragmented world, digital journalism confronts political and ideological challenges; the authors in this section discuss populism across media and audiences, open source investigations and digital surveillance, digital narrative journalism and tabloidization, and political disinformation.

Faced with global and epistemic challenges, in this section scholars outline digital journalism's function in climate change reporting, the role of emotion and affective proximity in covering wars, journalism's moral harms, power, and safety threats affecting journalists and audiences alike.

What do practices look like for journalistic actors in an expanding journalistic field & across global contexts? Here authors explore peripheral actors in lifestyle journalism, storytelling structures, digital sourcing & news practices, and the vital contributions of community radio and podcasting.

Digital journalism is inextricable from our understanding of platforms and the impact these changes have on its business logics; the authors in this section explore digital gatekeeping, business of platforms, grant-funded journalism, paywalls, mobile news and non-profit journalism.

What has technology meant for Digital Journalism Studies? In this section we find scholars conceptualizing journalistic innovation, helping us understand news recommender systems, debating the role of data analytics, examining fact checkers & automated fact-checking, and rethinking data journalism.

Journalism doesn’t exist without its audiences, and in this section, contributors introduce radical perspectives on audience studies, question news inequalities, revisit photojournalism in the digital age, explore digital audiences’ evolving news repertoires, and news literacy.

Looking back over the past decade, the authors in the 1st section revisit key concepts such as hybrid journalism, news practices, desertification of local news, press criticism, transparency, dark participation, digital disruptions & the bigger question of where Digital Journalism Studies is at.
