San Diego Progressives support the striking workers! No Contract = No Coffee ✊
The San Diego Progressive Democratic Club stands in solidarity with Starbucks Workers United as they launch their nationwide strike, today, November 13th. Since the first store unionized in 2021, Starbucks has failed to negotiate a fair contract in good faith with the workers. In fact, Starbucks is the largest violator of labor law in modern history with over 500 violations recognized by the National Labor Relations Board. The workers' demands are very straightforward: better hours & improved staffing, higher take-home pay, and resolution for the aforementioned HUNDREDS of unresolved unfair labor practice complaints. Here are some additional ways you can show your solidarity during this strike: Boycott all Starbucks products and locations for the entire strike. You can sign a virtual pledge to let the workers and Starbucks know that we mean business. SBWU Organizers are calling for supporters to join a picket line in solidarity and donate prepared meals to the striking workers. DSA San Diego is leading this support effort. Please reach out to the club directly if you would like to get plugged in. info@sandiegoprogressives.org If you are able to, you can contribute to the SBWU nationwide Strike Fund. We call on our members and allies to stand in solidarity with the SBWU workers for the entirety of their strike, which organizers project to last a full month. Together we can amplify a simple truth to the bad bosses at Starbucks: NO CONTRACT, NO COFFEE! SD Progressives Statement on Schumer’s cowardly capitulation.
SD Progressives Statement for Release Shame on Senators Cortez Masto, Durbin, Fetterman, Hasan, Kaine, King, Rosen, and Shaheen. The San Diego Progressive Democratic Club rejects the capitulation of these eight Senators on the government shutdown. After a forty day shutdown - the longest in American history - these defectors won us nothing. A "promise" from Republicans to hold a vote on ACA subsidies is unmoored from reality. On the heels of a wave election where the opposition to fascism turned out in unprecedented numbers, these eight Democratic-caucusing Senators caved in return for empty promises to the American people. Let us be clear, we are in an affordability crisis, and the resultant skyrocketing healthcare costs for millions of Americans is plainly unacceptable. San Diegans deserve so much more from our elected officials in the United States Senate. While we committedly aspire for a single-payer universal healthcare system, we simultaneously recognize the necessity of maintaining ACA subsidies to keep us and our neighbors insured. Through this shameful episode, Minority Leader Schumer has demonstrated his inability to lead. He must resign or be replaced. SD Progressives Statement for Release On Tuesday night, voters across California and the nation made history. With unprecedented turnout for a special election, we passed California's Proposition 50 by a 2-1 margin to deny Republicans their national power grab. In Poway we successfully recalled a corrupt city councilman who has now resigned in disgrace. Voters in Virginia delivered the first female governor and Lt. Governor, and expanded Democratic control of the statehouse securing a trifecta, and solidifying Virginia's own gerrymander plan. This in spite of attacks on the governor-elect that centered transphobia as a smear, but their hatred failed. New York celebrated the election of the most popular candidate for governor in nearly 60 years, a Muslim Democratic Socialist. The opposition campaign tried to smear him with 9/11 style Islamophobia, and tried to frame his common sense policies as radical. Again, their hatred failed. The San Diego Progressive Democratic Club celebrates these victories as a turning point in American politics, and we look to these new national leaders as inspiration and a model for the politics locally. Today it is clear, that when we organize, when we lead with conviction, and when we refuse to give in to cynicism or fear, our democracy chooses progress.
