Carrawburgh is one of 16 large Roman forts on Hadrian's Wall. It was constructed for a garrison of 500 soldiers around AD 130 and remained in use until the end of the 4th century. Outside the fort, a civilian settlement had several shrines, including a temple to the god Mithras that flourished between AD 200 and 350. ENGLISH HERITAGE HADRIAN'S WALL The Temple of Mithras A spiritual journey This structure is a Roman temple, erected around AD 200 and destroyed about 150 years later. It was dedicated to Mithras, the god of a Roman religious practice that emerged in the first century AD, whose inspiration came from the eastern Empire. Worship took place in small, secluded temples, resembling the cave in which Mithras was said to have killed a sacred bull and feasted with Sol, god of the sun. It is thought that each temple represented the cosmos, where worshippers underwent a spiritual journey from life to the afterlife, and feasted in a ritual celebration of Mithras. Participants progressed through a hierarchy of seven grades, the highest called 'Father. Each step involved an ordeal requiring mental and physical strength in the face of real or threatened peril. Membership was popular among soldiers and at Carrawburgh included three commanding officers of the nearby fort, who were patrons of the altars you can see in replica today.

Roman stone was incorporated into St. Wilfrid’s Crypt at Hexham Abbey. Hexham Abbey proudly displays Flavinus’ memorial stone, though it’s not incorporated into the fabric of the building. havg.org/visitor-guid...
