Actually, this could be cool. You could have a single commander backed by lesser ranked commanders like ensigns that provide unique buffs, but aren't nearly as special.

One of my favorite aspects is that it is a prequel without characters we already know, which means anything can (and did) happen to them. One of the biggest problems of Eps 1-3 was making characters we knew were alive in 4 and putting them in perilous situations. There's no drama in that.
