How did we achieve this miracle? Well, largely by outsourcing emissions to, e.g., China. But they still peaked nearly 20 years ago if you include those as well.

What might not be obvious if you're used to thinking of translation as something akin to currency conversion is that these might both be perfectly reasonable.

Also, still curious:
It might well be that there’s no interesting story behind China’s rather glaring absence from Physical: Asia, but I’m still curious.

I think that cuts both ways. We don't have statistical clarity, and are not likely to get it any time soon, so it seems premature to write it off as just a goofy stalking horse.

A nice bonus with colds these days is that nasal congestion and CPAP mix very poorly, and as the latter is the only one I can put on hold, I'm back to waking up every couple of minutes as a special treat.
