I read a book of sayings when I was, like, 10 (1990... so Googling sayings wasn't an option), and one of them was "Lose nothing for asking." I probably would have gone with "Lose nothing for asking*." because there are definitely edge cases... but I think it's essentially correct :-)

Heh. I made some greeting cards for questionable occasions, one of which was like yours: the Kool-aid man on the front and inside it read "I joined a cult!" (cult announcment). Another was Lord Vader looking down and inside it said "____, I am not your father." (adoption reveal). Good times :-)
