Perhaps the CofE will select someone with a true passion for spreading the gospel, growing God’s church, and tackling head-on the massive cultural and behavioural issues that hold the church back. I won’t be holding my breath.

…when he in fact sits very close indeed to the issues he’s had to resign over. His fellow bishops having a good giggle in the background are no better — hopefully none of them are in contention to become the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

How long until things actually change? How long until senior clerics actually take personal responsibility for institutional issues within the institutions they have responsibility for? It’s clear that Welby in this case seems to have divested himself of all personal responsibility…

where serious issues are taken unseriously and instead the authorities concern themselves more with diaries and procedures, and certainly don’t engage in any kind of introspection about whether they may in fact be part of the problem.

The other is more complicated. The excessively jovial and frankly inappropriate tone seems to me symptomatic of larger issues of culture and behaviour affecting the Anglican Communion — and the wider church — as a whole;
