What's really funny about this passage is that it makes it sound like they're in different parties. They're all in the Labour Party, which is also in government!
Leaders from Yorkshire gathered in parliament on Wednesday to step up calls on the government for an upgrade of the Sheffield-Leeds line – a route that was once part of a north-eastern leg of HS2. Upgrades including electrification and station expansion form part of the provisional NPR plan but uncertainty remains. City council leaders and metro mayors urged the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, to prioritise the link. Tracy Brabin, the mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “We deserve far better than the creaking and unreliable rail network we currently have serving the two great cities of Leeds and Sheffield.”

This quote in Helen Pidd's piece articulates something I've always picked up on in Manchester but never quite been able to put my finger on.
ain Edwards is a comedian who makes deadpan Instagram videos satirising the new Manchester, “a nightmare of overpriced novelty cocktails, retro fonts and burgers named after serial killers”. Edwards moved to Manchester from Rhyl in north Wales to go to university in 2010 and sees herself as part of the creative working class. “It’s actually surreal how fast it has changed. I think it just feels like the main reason for moving here isn’t due to a love of Manchester, it is due to it being (a bit) cheaper than London. There’s a feeling that newbies don’t want Manchester, they want London, so that naturally affects how they interact with the place. And because money talks, the city will always adapt to this fast cash above all else.”

Dear readers — if you’ve been in Sheffield for a little while, you’ve probably heard about the ski village fire. And if you’ve been around for much longer, you’ll have heard the rumours that swirl around that famous blaze on Sunday, 29th April 2012. One version has it that it was a pure accident — kids who were just having a bit of fun when things got out of hand. But there’s always been another view, that maybe there was more to it than that. Did someone stand to benefit from the plastic piste pyre?
