If we can’t create space for people to step in, make mistakes, and try again, we risk closing the door on the very people we need alongside us. And when people feel shut out or overwhelmed, that’s when apathy takes over—and that apathy only strengthens the systems we’re fighting against.

I believe in showing grace—not because it’s easy, but because it matters. Kindness (and to be clear, kindness is distinctly different from politeness )is an essential part of how we should show up for each other, but grace and kindness is also a critical strategy for coalition building on the left.

Cancel culture has left everyday people afraid to try to be allies—worried about what happens if they get it wrong. But cancel culture should be about holding people in power accountable, not shutting down those who are genuinely trying their best to grow and unlearn.
