If you look up what it takes to become a New York Times bestseller, you'll find a book typically needs to sell 5,000 to 10,000 copies in a single week to make the list. What you won't find, without digging deeper, is that list is heavily curated/selective, and that "indie" publishers are ignored.

Once upon a time I wrote a 5,000 word short story with 13 scene changes, 2 different narrative perspectives (3rd person limited and 3rd person omniscient), including 5 distinct POVs which told 11 Stories centering around 13 “main characters" and 23 other “important” characters.
