Watching the red line BART train I was on earlier pull into Millbrae from Caltrain. If I hadn’t transferred between Embarcadero and 4th and King by bike, I wouldn’t have made the train I’m on and my trip would have been 15 minutes longer. Not great

Having my first hojicha latte at Forest Tea Bar at Shattuck and Carleton. Key advantage of living in berkeley is unbelievable cafe culture and variety… and what a time to be alive with the proliferation of quality matcha and green teas generally.

and no I couldn’t last a week in Phoenix without a car, jesus dude
July 27, 2025 at 4:41 AM
I had a 4-hour layover in Phoenix on my way home from Mexico so I took the light rail to @culdesac.bsky.social and followed it up with a beverage, meal, and some spice shopping at Haji-Baba, some great spot I found on the internet (they sell a falafel sandwich for under $6)

no car very cool

All 1162 pages complete. One of the most magnificent books I have read in my entire life. It is about so much more than you think it is, and you should absolutely read it if you work or organize in the world of municipal politics.

The rest of Shattuck south of this block sucks too. In The Boulevard Book by Berkeley’s own Allan Jacobs and Elizabeth MacDonald, Shattuck is referred to as a prime example of a failed boulevard. It has many of the attributes of a boulevard, but lacks certain ones that are required to succeed.

And of course, car infestation makes this instinct to keep moving far stronger. Even if there were benches on the edge of the plaza, who would want to sit there in a sea of cars? Shattuck needs a bus lane, and there shouldn’t be cars on this block ultimately.

The Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza redesign was a missed opportunity. It feels like an airport, not a place. This is made worse by the privatized movable tables and chairs. You need to be a restaurant client to use the Activation Space™️ in the middle of the plaza.

Quick thread on Downtown Berkeley, a place that sucks because of bad urban design. This deeply frustrates me.

Downtown Berkeley feels in some places like an airport, and in some places like a deserted midwest avenue. It does not feel like a comfortable place to exist.

took the new intercity rail (El Insurgente) in Mexico!! smooth, fast ride to Toluca. I hope people get hooked and there’s political will for more regional trains in CDMX. so, so nice
