And second, it's actually a good place to land an expedition. The bay next to the ice shelf is relatively protected from the vicious weather around Antarctica, and the shelf itself is fairly flat and stable once you're on it.

First, it is a part of Antarctica that features very prominently into many explorations (both previously and modern day). It's often the starting point for a lot of expeditions. Plus, it has Mt. Erebus next to it, which is an active volcano (southernmost on earth)!
