That's a good point. I'm young enough that my entire political life has come after that period. Its hard to imagine any moderates that don't end up like Joe Manchin.

You're right. Duverger's law does illustrate the spoiler effect, which is a piece of the puzzle, but it doesn't fully explain the 50-50 split.

The demographics got cut cleanly because the voting system makes any system other than two parties impossible. The two parties have been in constant competition to take positions that give them even 1% of the vote. Over time you will always get roughly 50/50.
