A window display signalling the coming war, which everyone in Canterbury is ignoring as “newspaper talk”, believing that it will “come out all right”.
I wandered idly through the streets, coming at last to the most bizarre shop window I have ever seen. It was full of rattles, hand-bells, whistles, electric torches and gas-masks. The shop called itself the A.R.P. Information Bureau... The central feature of the window was a chart setting forth the various signals to be used in air raids. Upon the signal “action warning,” people were to take cover; upon the signal “raiders past,” they were to emerge. The gas alarm would be signalled by rattles and the “all clear” by hand-bells... No one seemed interested in this window, and I was its only student.
