Monotreme milk contains a highly expressed antibacterial protein not found in other mammals, perhaps to compensate for the more septic manner of milk intake associated with the absence of teats."

Gosh, I wonder if dinosaurs were like this!

Male monotremes do not have a prostate or seminal vesicles."
Curiously, monotremes don't have tits: "Rather than through teats, monotremes lactate from their mammary glands via openings in their skin....

So the male monotremes also have both a cloaca and a penis, but according to Wikipedia: "In monotremes, only semen passes through the penis while urine is excreted through the male's cloaca. The monotreme penis is similar to that of turtles and is covered by a preputial sac.

OK, I looked it up. The single duct that monotremes have for urinary, defecatory, and reproductive functions is indeed called the "cloaca."
February 19, 2025 at 9:12 PM
Fossil Daddy, How is a cloaca different from whatever a monotreme has? (The weird mammals in Australia that have just one hole (for both excretion and reproduction). A platypus is a monotreme. Also I think monotremes are the only mammals that lay eggs.

Ha! I remember from high school Latin that "cloaca" was the word for sewer or drain. :) Rome was famous for its "cloacae romanae."
