My friend Jane Levy is so great in A LITTLE PRAYER opening today in NY/LA. Check it out if you can, it's regional filmmaking at its best, made with love with an exceptional cast

2nd part of my super fun/deep/obsessive talk with Bret Easton Ellis about the incredible film year of 1982, as well as my personal doc FILM GEEK now streaming on HBOMAX.
July 14, 2025 at 9:49 PM
This was an EXTREMELY fun podcast to do. Bret & I go deep on films of 1982, & talk about my doc FILM GEEK (finally streaming on HBOMAX). Though raised in different parts of the country, we share a near identical cinematic obsessiveness & it was a blast to connect on that deep level

Brian De Palma's DRESSED TO KILL-- one of my favorite movies I saw as teenager (& saw being filmed!) is one of 200 movies featured in my personal doc FILM GEEK -which after runs at American Cinematheque in LA & Film Forum in NY is now streaming on HBOMAX. Perfect July 4th long weekend viewing!

ADOLESCENCE on Netflix is extraordinary. It's jaw-dropping filmmaking of the highest order. If the acting & writing weren't so damn powerful, you'd think that the brilliant one-take episodes were a stunning gimmick, but it all works in delirious concert. Blown the fuck away.

Steven Soderbergh's BLACK BAG is just great. A fast, funny, extremely smart spy thriller that had me from the opening font. David Koepp's script is tight and surprising, with a great cast and a sleek style throughout. If this is your (black) bag, go see it in a theatre.

Finally caught up with Albert Serra's mysterious PACIFICTION (from 2022). It's a thing of beauty-- funny, moody, sad & stunning. Set in Tahiti, It's nearly three hours long, and it moves at a pace all its own. Steamy, languid & beautiful, it's got a Graham Greene/David Lynch vibe thats hard to shake
February 8, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Finally caught up with Aaron Schimberg's A DIFFERENT MAN which I could not recommend more highly. It's weird, funny & fully unique. If this was 1998 & you lived in NYC you would have seen it at the Angelika & lived for this film. Today it sort of slips through the cracks-- but don't let it!

Really loved Chris Wilcha's FLIPSIDE that I caught on Criterion channel. It's a unique doc, that starts off one way-- but veers to many unforeseen delights. It's full of nostalgia, and what could have beens, & joy & art & Uncle Floyd & the dreams we refuse to give up on

Devastating news as Ezra Edelman is one of our great filmmakers (his OJ: MADE IN AMERICA documentary is a masterpiece) and I would have loved to see his Prince doc. Hate when filmmakers devote years of their lives/careers to something only to see it disappear because of corporate fear or greed.

Hey, thanks Amos! Really appreciate it!!! (Steaming on Criterion Channel and on iTunes etc!)

Been off social for a while, as the tragedies in LA unfold & our community comes together. But David Lynch's passing has brought me back. How lucky was I that I got to see his work as it was released. Bending my mind w/ each film, inspiring, confounding & mesmerizing. My fav photo of him, btw
