Yes, from what I experienced, large companies tend to prefer custom engines as they better fit their needs and/or because they were already there before Unreal became that important (e.g Ubisoft's Anvil for open worlds). And also because UE is not free at all when you start selling millions haha

3- This is a competitive game and yet, there is no pressure, no agression, no bad move. Everything is positive and the goal is just to optimize better than the others, not to make them feel bad. It’s like a race you run alongside your friends. And I want to capture this nice feeling.

2- What I call “gameplay purity”. All the game mechanics are simple and work well together. There is no extra alternate or useless gameplay.
For example, having to much resources allows you to breed more, too many eggs allows you to draw, too many cards allows you to gather more resources. Perfect.

1- The relation between nature and gameplay, of course! The entire game revolves around actual birds, their physical distinctive features, habitats, breeding behaviors, feeding behaviors, … converted in game mechanics!
100% core design philosophy to WSU!

Also, as a game dev I found the game’s scope really well balanced. It feels reasonable in term of gameplay depth, asset to produce, game length, etc. 📝

If you want a short game that don’t use your brain too much and yet find some hope for a brighter future, it’s a good choice!

They manage to bring a subtle mix of old and new, bringing solid references while innovating, navigating on multiple sub-genres from surf rock to shoegaze and still making their own cohesive sound.
Incredibly refreshing, strongly recommended if you like guitars, drums and those loud instruments.
